Separate light and heavy material
Bag leaves and small clippings. Keep thick branches, stumps, dirt, rock, and construction material separate because they differ sharply in weight and disposal handling.
Watch for thorns and desert hazards
Mesquite and other thorny material can puncture bags and gloves. Tell the crew what the pile contains and keep people away from unstable or sharp stacks.
Plan the loading route
Measure gates and identify steps, slopes, soft ground, or a long carry. Protect irrigation lines and mark anything that could be damaged by a wheelbarrow or repeated foot traffic.
Do not mix in household hazards
Keep chemicals, pesticides, fuel, batteries, and unknown containers out of the pile. Ask the appropriate local program how those items should be handled.
